US President meets with G7 leaders, Ukrainian President
US President Joe Biden has met with his G7 counterparts and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to discuss Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and new measures to punish Moscow.
US President Joe Biden, who praised the alliance between the Group of Seven major economies for standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was scheduled to meet with his fellow leaders via video conference from his home in Delaware at 11:00 a.m. He is spending his weekend while a White House official said the leaders are meeting.
Ahead of the meeting, the White House said that during the meeting, the leaders will discuss the increase in sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries since the February 24 attack on Moscow.
A statement from the White House said, “Leaders will discuss the latest developments in Russia’s war against Ukraine, the global impact of Vladimir Putin’s war, support for Ukraine and its future, and We will continue to show solidarity in the collective response of the G7 countries.
The White House said in a statement that the meeting “included measures to increase our unprecedented sanctions on Vladimir Putin for imposing a heavy price on the offensive.”
The meeting between the two leaders took place at a time when Russia’s Victory Day celebrations are set to take place on Monday.
Vladimir Putin called the attack a “special military operation” to disarm Ukraine and rid it of Western-backed anti-Russian nationalism, while Ukraine and its allies say Russia did not provoke. The war started.
The United States and Europe have imposed tough sanctions on Russia since its invasion, and Russian banks have been accused of trying to damage and destroy the Russian economy and limit the resources used to advance the war. Businesses and individuals are being targeted.
