North Korea announces acceleration in Nuclear weapons development

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to accelerate the development of his country’s nuclear weapons while overseeing a huge military parade showcasing intercontinental ballistic missiles.

According to a report by the foreign news agency Reuters, North Korea’s state media said that a military parade was also organized on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the North Korean Armed Forces on Monday night.

North Korea has recently stepped up its weapons tests and demonstrations of military might as nuclear disarmament talks with the United States stall and a new conservative administration is taking power in South Korea.

According to North Korean media, Kim Jong-un, addressing the gathering, said that the nuclear powers of our republic must be fully prepared to carry out their responsible mission and must at any moment mobilize their unique resistance.

He said the main mission of North Korea’s nuclear forces is to resist, but its use can never be limited to a single target.

“If anyone violates the fundamental interests of our state, our nuclear powers will have to carry out a decisive second mission,” Kim Jong-un said.

Footage released on North Korean state media shows Kim Jong-un, dressed in white emperor-style clothing, shaking hands with senior officials during a parade of North Korea’s largest ballistic missile, the Huasang 17.

The North Korean missile was unveiled in 2020 and was first tested last month, but Seoul officials believe it exploded in mid-air.
